"Rīgas satiksme" starts reintroducing public transportation fare discounts for passengers of specific categories

"Rīgas satiksme" hereby announces that passengers of specific categories who had their public transportation fare discounts restored from May 13 by the Interim Administration of the Riga City Council shall have their status as discount recipients renewed on their e-tickets automatically. Restoration of public transportation fare discounts is already under way, and it is going to be implemented gradually.  In turn, 9th and 12th grade students who have to attend consulting classes and exams will have the opportunity to use public transport on weekdays without registering their trips, but showing a valid student's e-card or school ID to ticket inspectors from May 18 to the end of the academic year.

Interim Administration of the Riga City Council has reintroduced discounts for passengers of the following categories:

  • Technical employees of municipal general education institutions, informal education institutions, pre-school education institutions, professional sports schools, music and art schools of the city of Riga, who work for no less than 20 hours a week;
  • Intramural students of professional general education, vocational education or professional secondary education programs of professional education institutions registered within the administrative territory of the city of Riga, as well as intramural students of professional general education, vocational education or professional secondary education programs of professional education institutions registered outside the administrative territory of the city of Riga who have declared their residence within the administrative territory of the city of Riga;
  • Disabled persons of group III who have declared their residence within the administrative territory of the city of Riga;
  • Parents with many children registered with the Municipal Register of Families with Many Children (Family Support) Register of the city of Riga, who have three to five dependent children;
  • Parents with many children registered with the Municipal Register of Families with Many Children (Family Support) Register of the city of Riga, who have six or more dependent children;
  • 9th and 12th grade students who have to attend consulting classes and exams can use public transport on weekdays without registering their trips, but showing a valid student's e-card or school ID to ticket inspectors from May 18 to the end of the academic year.

Persons who had access to these allowances up to the time of revocation thereof will have their public transportation fare discounts restored automatically; however, those who did not have this status before will have to visit one of the "Rīgas satiksme" customer service centres.

Discounts will be restored gradually in order to mitigate the risk of overcrowding of public transport to the extent possible. Please also be reminded to assess the necessity of each trip before using public transport. If there is no other alternative, make sure to wear a mask to cover our mouth and nose in trams, trolleybuses and buses.

"Rīgas satiksme" also reminds that the Interim Administration has kept discounts in place in the same amounts for disabled persons of groups I and II, pre-school aged children, employees of the State Police and the Municipal Police, as well as teachers of municipal educational institutions. Healthcare practitioners and social workers may use public transport free of charge while the emergency is in effect.

Passengers of other specific groups – higher education students, retirees, members of the Chernobyl accident elimination team, persons aged above 75, etc. – can only use public transport with full-priced tickets.

Full-priced tickets can be pre-purchased using street ticket vending machines or at over 400 retail areas across the territory of Riga. Passengers can use their current e-tickets – personal tickets, blank tickets, Riga resident's cards and student's e-cards – to purchase new tickets. Please see the link for a list of ticket trade outlets: https://www.rigassatiksme.lv/lv/biletes/bilesu-tirdzniecibas-vietas/tirdzniecibas-vietas/

Please be reminded that in order to protect public transport drivers against the risk of infection, public transport drivers do not sell public transport tickets.
